Have you ever heard of amniotic or placenta dressings?
Yes, the amniotic membrane and even thin slices of the placenta can be used for wound care. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring effects and contains growth factors that promote wound healing. Hospitals use amniotic grafts for burn victims, acute wound care, cornea repair, and more.
Did you know there are two ways to use these healing benefits yourself?
You can freeze thin strips of raw placenta to place and heal nipples when breastfeeding. Simply place the frozen placenta on the nipple for 30 minutes to an hour, then wash the breast and discard the placenta in the trash.
The second way is what you see in the picture that an O.D. client requested. The dried amniotic membrane has been stretched and cut into strips. The strip can be stored in a cool, dry place in a ziplock bag or frozen. You can then cut the size piece needed to cover a wound or burn, then wrap it with gauze, allowing it to stay on the area for 30 minutes to an hour before removing and discarding it.
Did you know the healing powers of the placenta go far beyond postpartum? Would you use your placenta as a wound dressing for yourself or your family?
